USF2000 – Hindman Heads to Indy
Wayside, N.J., May 24 – Last Memorial Day weekend, Trent Hindman entered the fifth and sixth rounds of the 2011 BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda at Lime Rock Park with one pole and four top-five finishes. He ended the weekend third in points with his second pole of the season and two podium finishes; including his first Skip Barber National race win. The weekend changed Hindman’s season, as he went on to score three wins and six pole positions on his way to second in the championship while earning “Rookie of the Year” honors.
After a slow start to this season, now Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Trent Hindman enters the fifth round of the 2012 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda ninth in points with a pair of Top 5 finishes. As the series gets back to action as part of the annual “Night Before the 500” at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, Hindman hopes a good result in the season’s only oval race will jumpstart his campaign ahead of the series’ second mid-season break.
Hindman returns to the states and USF2000 after a weekend at Rockingham Motor Speedway in England, where he scored 11th place 6th place finishes with Cliff Dempsey Racing in Rounds 4 and 5 of the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship.
Before Hindman can take the wheel of his USF2000 ride Friday afternoon, he will slide into the cockpit of one of his rides from last year, a Formula Skip Barber, to help lead the Indy Lights field on its pace lap during Friday’s Firestone Freedom 100. Hindman will join teammate Spencer Pigot, who will drive his USF2000 car, and Team Pelfrey driver Jack Hawksworth, who will pilot his Star Mazda car around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway as part of the Mazda Road to Indy display.
Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis
Standing out a bit like a sore thumb in the 2012 USF2000 schedule is the 11/16ths of a mile oval a few miles west of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the town of Clermont. Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis is the sole oval on this year’s schedule and as such provides a unique set of challenges to a field of drivers that for most of will be their first time racing on anything but a road course.
In the official test earlier in the month, Hindman was within two-tenths of a second of the quickest driver in combined results, his Cape Motorsport with Wayne Taylor Racing teammate Matthew Brabham.
